Jack has been a writer, painter, raconteur and generalist all his life. He served in the Royal Marines becoming RSM, and went on to work on the P and O line and then in the Medway Ports authority. For a time he was editor of Medport News. After redundancy from the MPA he worked as a bargemate on the acid barge Repertor and the ballast barge Roffen under Captain Allan Jenner, whom he has immortalised in fiction as Alford Jeffson. Much of his writing and painting is linked to the life of the marine and the seaman in general.
