Village Events 2010

We now have our new village hall and are planning a programme to use it as much as possible.

This page will show the events which are happening in the village this year, and when they have happened how they went!

Special events:

Monday 19th July: The Gold Lyre of Ur
We welcome Andy Lowings and Jennifer Sturdy for a very special evening when they will be showing us and talking about the reconstructed and playable Gold Lyre of Ur.

In April 2003 Andy formed a group to remake an authentic, but playable version of the famous Gold Lyre of Ur which was damaged in Baghdad during the conflict.
Fragments of this extremely old instrument were found in Ur in 1929.

To be done authentically the correct original adhesives, wood from the Sumerian region and correct gold quality and thickness were used. The very best craftsmen assisted, by donating their work. For three years, much work and effort went into realising the dream of recreating an authentic copy of the Gold Lyre. Come and listen to Andy tell us about the project and see the fabulous musical instrument that his project has recreated.
It has been seen in Washington DC, Berlin, Brussels, Liverpool Cathedral, Canterbury cathedral, the British Museum and heard on the BBC Radio 4. It is now coming to Wass!

Saturday 20th February: Our first panto in the new hall 'The Book of Fate' based on a Yorkshire tale went very well and was a sell out. OUr thanks to all who helped and who came.

Thursday 25th March:  Holmes and Watson: The Farewell Tour A comedy drama for all the family. Comment from one of the audience - I laughed so much my stomach ached. All agreed it was a brilliant night. Thanks to Angus and Ross Theatre company and to Rural Arts.

Tuesday May 4th 7.30pm: Pat Borthwick, a published and prize winning poet entertained us with readings of her poetry. Even one who declares that he doesn't like poetry had to admit that is was a very good session.

Saturday May 22nd: Storytelling workshop with Adrian O drew in a few newcomers to storytelling and Adrian provided a clear overview.

Evening storytelling event with Adrian O and the Wass Storytellers 7.30pm. A hot day and a very enjoyable evening.

Sunday June 6th: Open Gardens and Scarecrow Display, with teas, tombola. stalls and Morris dancing 12 - 5pm. Yet again it rained, even harder this year than previously, but we managed to raise a good sum.

Saturday June 12th: Pieces of Eight acapella choir 7.30pm. The audience were well entertained by a wide variety of music. £200 was raised to be divided between the village hall and the church.
